A week later and it was off to the 2nd round Protyre National Asphalt Rally Championship, which the RED Industries/Adgespeed backed Subaru Impreza S11 replica of Adrian Spencer and Team Adgespeed. Again with Ashley Trimble on the notes and it was a new event for the team. Held over closed public roads around the Malvern area in Worcestershire, the team were looking forward a new and challenging event.
With warm and dry conditions, which brought out the spectators to the ceremonial start on the Friday night in Ledbury the crews set off on the Saturday morning loop of 4 stages.
The 1st stage dented Adrian’s confidence with a big moment the very narrow and technical stage on a very slippery 90 right. However a lot of crews had the same due to the amount of loose sand on the corner. On reaching stage 2 they found this was canceled due an accident blocking the stage, fortunately both crew members were OK, Stages 3 and 4 were better as they were a bit more open, Adrian was struggling to get a good feel for the stages and they finished the 1st loop in 61st place.
The next loop of 5 stages and at last the times were getting better as Adrian was getting a bit more confident and had a clean run which moved them up to 49th O/A.
For the last loop of 5 stages a repeat of the previous and things didn’t get off to a good start when 1/4 mile into the stage they had to stop due a car just ahead of them crashed and blocked the stage, fortunately no one was hurt. On arriving at the next stage this was then also canceled before they could start due to another accident. So on to the penultimate stage and after about half way thought as the exited a hairpin left, Adrian felt something wrong and as they attempted a 45 left into 45 right into an industrial complex something broke and the car didn’t go right instead went straight on into a large straw bale!!! End of rally.
On investigation it was found that the front crossmember had broken, which the team had never seen before, but a sad end to a disappointing rally from Adrian's point of view. So with a few weeks before the Pokerstars rally on the Isle of Man the team would have their work cut out to fix the car.
