The day dawned bright, but freezing cold but with ice about the stages and with some in trepidation the crews left the start 45 mins later than the normal start time hoping the stages would clear some of the ice patches.
Stage 1 a 17 miler of the 1st loop of 2 stages, was extremely icy in parts but taking it steady and probably too cautious Adrian and Mark found themselves down in 21 st place although being 2nd quickest of the higher seeded crews as the weather definitely favoured the lower seeded crews due to the improving conditions. The shorter 2 stage 3.5 miles back to service and with the improving conditions 11th quickest time was the result.
Stages 3 followed being repeat of stage 1 and with the conditions improving Adrian and mark went 1.5 mins quicker on stage 3, setting 8th quickest time, however disaster struck at the flying finish which was still covered in ice, loosing control the car spun off backwards into a bank narrowly missing a marshal on the way and damaging the bumper, exhaust, light and really upsetting Adrian, the rear spoiler a genuine ex works carbon fibre one:'( Adrian and Mark managed to limp through stage 4 with the car down on power due to the damaged exhaust and not quite sure what the damage was, at least it was a short stage and service followed and they had moved back up to 11 O/A Fortunately the damage was mainly cosmetic and after some sterling work by the service crew Paul and Barry replacing the damaged exhaust and patching the car up, the car was ready to carrying on with no mechanical damage.
Stage 5 a 7.5 miler and Adrian was far too cautious and off the pace after the off and settled for a steady run to get his confidence back, but they dropped down to 12th O/A. Having settled down and got his confidence back, Adrian decided to push on for the next loop of stages 6 and 7 and setting top ten times, they moved back to 11th O/A. The penultimate stage 8 had Adrian with the bit between his teeth and 6th quickest time over the 14.5 mile stage had Adrian and Mark move up to 10th and only 2 seconds behind 9th.
For the last stage the temperature was back down to freezing and unsure of the conditions and with a rally the following week, backed off slightly but still managed to take 8th overall and 2nd in class.
All in all a good result considering the conditions and this result saw Adrian taking 3rd and Mark 2nd in the B13 class in the 2012 REIS – Get Connected MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, a great result after the ups and downs of the season.
After having some great results this year Adrian and Mark would like to thank their sponsors Adgespeed, RED Industries and Hazwaste Environmental and are now looking forward to improving on this years result in 2013
